Gambling and gambling reform is a major issue in the Coalition’s election campaign and is set to be a key topic at the party’s next national conference in October.
The ABC’s Victoria Jones has been covering the issue and spoke to one of the leading voices in the debate.
She says Australia’s gambling problem is not unique.
“Australia is not alone in this,” she said.
“I’ve been here in Australia and seen the number of people that have had problems gambling and the number that are gambling responsibly, and so on.”
We’re seeing the number in Australia that have gambling problems that are being managed and dealt with.
“This is an issue that is happening across the country, but it’s particularly a problem in Australia because it’s such a large population.”
Ms Jones says many people feel they have to gamble because they have no other options.
“It’s really important to point out that it’s a very small percentage of the population that have gambled and it’s also a small percentage that are going to be able to gamble responsibly,” she explained.
“So there are a number of Australians that have to take up that responsibility and that’s a good thing.”
Ms O’Brien says she’s seen an increase in the number people seeking help from the Government.
“There has been a significant increase in people that are actually seeking help to get help, and it has come from a number in Government that’s working with us,” she says.
“And we’ve been very clear that this is not a government program.”
In the last few years, online gambling has become more prevalent in Australia.
“One of the things that we’ve done is to look at the number and we’ve also looked at the cost and how it impacts on the consumer, and we have a plan that we’re going to put in place for that,” she explains.
“The Government has a responsibility to make sure that there’s a fair and equitable way for all Australians to gamble safely, and that includes online gambling.”ABS data shows online gambling accounts for about 1.2 per cent of Australia’s casino revenue.
