The first jobs program for California residents to receive federal financial aid to help them get back on their feet has begun its second year and is looking to add more than 20,000 jobs in the coming months.
The program, called Job2Go, aims to bridge the gap between people who are out of work but still looking for a job and people looking to start their own businesses, said Dan Schreiber, the president of Job2GO.
Schreiber says the program is targeting people who may have lost a job or may be in an underemployed position because of the state’s harsh economic conditions.
Schrifber said the first Job2G, which opened in November, had just 12 people applying for jobs, with about 3,000 of those accepted into the program, which has grown to more than 10,000 people.
Job2Go will have at least 10,500 applicants for the first year and up to 15,000 for the second year, Schreber said.
The jobless are looking for jobs in construction, landscaping, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, legal services, social services, health care and manufacturing, Schraiber said.
Schraiber, who has been with the company since 2008, said the program has been successful.
“There’s been some attrition, but the growth of the program in the last couple of years has been unprecedented,” he said.
“It’s been pretty extraordinary to see the level of enthusiasm among the people who applied for the program.”
Schreber also said the unemployment rate in California, which was 8.9 percent in March, is at a new low of 4.7 percent.
“I would say that it’s been a really positive thing, in that people who were unemployed for a while have gotten a chance to get back into the workforce,” he added.
“In many cases, people are getting a new job, and that can make a huge difference.”
Job2 Go was initially designed to help people who can’t find work but have no other options, such as college graduates and those who are not currently enrolled in school.
Schneiber said the initial Job2g program will be expanded over time to include more types of job seekers and other demographics.
“We’re looking to have people who have no skills, but are looking to get into the field of employment,” he told reporters in Sacramento on Tuesday.
Schmeber said his company is working on expanding the program to include people who live in Los Angeles, San Francisco, the Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest.
Job 2Go, which is part of the California Department of Finance, is a joint venture between the State of California and the Department of Employment Development.
The State of Colorado is also participating in the program.
The U.S. Department of Labor is funding the program through the Workforce Innovation Initiative, which provides grants for the creation of new and expanded job-training programs.
The federal government also has created a new Job2go program to connect people who cannot find jobs with jobs.
